Is Cosmetic Surgery and Plastic Surgery the same?
Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery though belongs to the same area of affection, namely the skin, yet are as different from each other as a drop of water and that of mercury. Cosmetic surgery is done on persons who want to enhance the condition of their skin, and it has been derived from the Greek word “Kosmesis” – which means an adorning. On the other hand plastic surgery has been derived from the Greek word “Plastikos” – which means to shape or cast. Both the surgeries have a huge difference in the functioning, motive, and procedures.
Now if we throw some light on the Cosmetic surgery, we can see that a person undergoing cosmetic surgery is not at all forced to do so under any medical disturbance, either it is due to some developmental fetal defects, or may be some other aspects related with the better looks or appearance of the eyes, ears, facial looks, nose, sometimes even cosmetic dentistry is also done. The main aim of cosmetic surgery is the improvement of the mental annoyance of a person due to the poor condition of the physical well being of the same. It helps in poising of a person and even helping to lead a happier life after the success of the surgery. It can hence be said that cosmetic surgery is only useful in the regaining of the self-esteem and the outlook of a person, by giving that person a sensation of well being from within, giving him an edge over the others, which may have been missing earlier.
Now if we take a turn towards Plastic surgery, we will see a condition quite contradictory from that of the Cosmetic surgery. This type of surgery is also known as a reconstructive surgery. Instead of the motive of only looks and appearance, here the main reason lays some disease of any sort, for example malignant cell elimination, then there are some developmental defects during the birth, some kind of crippling, some mutilating disease or victims of trauma, or to regain the physiological functions of the body, comprising of the mind also.
In some severe conditions of operative cases on the breast like that of its removal surgeries, also known as Mastectomy, there are chances that both the plastic and the cosmetic surgeries have some common characteristics. In these severe procedures the whole process of the surgeries cannot be given a common name as it involves both fractions of the surgeries. In such cases, it becomes very difficult for the medical insurance providers, to know which form of a surgery was the one being operated as they have different rules for each of them.
Now one of the developmental anomalies which we can discuss is the Cleft Palate. This is a condition which is characterized by the non-fusion of the two palates during its development from the Branchial Arches. In order to cure such an anomaly, there is no other option, than to undergo a reconstructive plastic surgery. This case cannot be said to have cosmetic importance only. This developmental defect does affect life drastically and it may cause problems in speech. Thus as has been said earlier also, we can now explain the difference between the two surgeries in other words saying that cosmetic surgery is a Luxury, while Plastic surgery is a need.
